Who can apply: Doctoral candidates in the humanities or social sciences who have achieved ABD (All But Dissertation) status by the fellowship start date, need to conduct research in Japan to complete their dissertation, have sufficient Japanese proficiency, and are US citizens or permanent residents. Length: 4 to 12 months. Airfare, health insurance, settling-in and departure allowances, monthly stipend, dependent allowance and insurance, and enrollment fees where applicable. Field: Japanese Studies / Asian Studies. Deadline: December 1, 2025, 11:59pm EST (for 2026-2027 fellowship period beginning June 2026-March 2027); next cycle expected annually around December 1.
