New York University School of Law
Hauser Global Scholarship (NYU Law)
The Hauser Global Scholarship is New York University School of Law's most prestigious award for students on its full-time Master of Laws (LLM). About ten lawyers a year from law schools outside the United States receive full tuition and a living stipend, and join a programme that since 1995 has set out to make American legal education more global.

How to apply
Apply to the full-time LLM through LSAC and NYU Law's online application, choosing the Hauser Global Scholarship on the form and attaching the extra essay of 500 to 750 words on a legal dilemma facing a country, a region or the world.
What the scholarship gives
A Hauser Global Scholarship pays full tuition for the full-time LLM and a stipend towards living costs such as rent, textbooks and other study materials, for the year of study at NYU. Scholars take a full part in the events of the Hauser Global Law School Program and share the perspectives of their own legal systems with the rest of the school.
Scholars follow the LLM specialisation of their choice. Recent classes have included lawyers heading for the general LLM, corporation law, international taxation, legal theory and international business regulation, litigation and arbitration.
Who it is for
Candidates must be graduates of a law school outside the United States and must apply to the full-time LLM for entry in the autumn; part-time students cannot receive Law School scholarships. The scholarship is merit-based: scholars are chosen for their intellectual and leadership ability and their capacity to take part productively in a global community of scholars and practitioners.
Admission to the LLM itself is highly selective. The school typically receives about 2,800 applications a year for a full-time class of about 450, and admits students with excellent law school records and strong recommendations, taking significant professional accomplishment into account.
Planning the year in New York
Even a full scholarship leaves some costs to plan for. All foreign-trained lawyers must take two introductory courses that start before the formal beginning of the semester; they carry no extra tuition, but arriving early means extra living and health insurance costs that the school's student budget does not include. Many LLM students also sit the New York bar examination, whose costs are likewise outside the budget.
Scholars who bring a spouse or children can apply for the Law School's limited family housing, add family members to NYU's student health insurance at extra cost, and apply for the University's childcare subsidy. Admitted international students are advised by NYU's Office of Global Services on visas for dependants, including the extra funds the US government requires them to show.
Other NYU LLM awards
NYU Law encourages full-time LLM candidates to apply on the admission form for every scholarship they are eligible for, and it has other merit awards besides the Hauser. The Arthur T. Vanderbilt Scholarships pay full tuition for a limited number of LLM students; the Podell Global Graduate Legal Scholarship pays one student's tuition, living expenses and a return flight, for citizens and residents of low and lower-middle income countries; and many admitted students receive partial-tuition Dean's Graduate Awards.
How selection works
- LLM application. Candidates apply to the full-time LLM through LSAC and the online application, choosing the scholarship on the form and attaching the Hauser essay.
- Screening. Faculty and admissions officers screen the applications intensively.
- Selection Committee. The Hauser Scholars Selection Committee, a committee of distinguished international leaders, chooses the scholars.
- Decision. Decisions are released by email; most foreign-educated applicants hear no later than early May.
