Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships bring early-career researchers and a small number of artists from more than 180 countries to Swiss universities for a research stay, a full PhD or, in the arts, a master's. They are awarded by a federal commission that has chosen foreign scholars on merit since 1961. Everything hinges on one relationship: without a professor in Switzerland who backs your project in writing, you cannot apply.

How to apply
Apply online through the Commission's portal; each country's applications are handled by the Swiss embassy there, which sets the deadline listed on the official site.
Three kinds of scholarship
A research fellowship funds a stay of 6 to 12 months in Switzerland during a doctorate held elsewhere. It cannot be extended.
A PhD scholarship funds a doctorate at a Swiss institution: 12 months at a time, renewable twice up to 36 months, and, from 2028, up to four years. Host institutions can be any cantonal university, university of applied sciences, ETH Zurich or EPFL, or one of the four ETH Domain research institutes (PSI, WSL, Empa and Eawag).
Art scholarships fund a first master's at a Swiss conservatory or art school, for 12 months extendable to a maximum of 21. They are offered to applicants from a limited number of countries only; the country list shows which.
What the scholarship pays, and what it does not
Holders receive 2,450 Swiss francs a month, which is a scholarship and not a salary. Holders from outside the EU and EFTA have their health insurance paid and receive a return flight allowance that varies by country. Everyone receives a one-off grant of 600 francs towards a rental deposit and a Half-Fare Travelcard for Swiss public transport.
The scholarship does not pay tuition fees, which the official page puts at 600 to 2,000 francs a semester, nor conference costs, fieldwork or family allowances. The programme warns that the rules for bringing family members to Switzerland are restrictive.
Who selects, and on what
In each country the Swiss embassy handles the applications and sets the deadline; the country list gives each embassy's opening date, deadline and contact. The FCS then assesses the candidates on three things: their academic profile and competence, the originality and quality of the research or artistic project, and the quality of supervision and the prospect of lasting collaboration between the scholar and Switzerland. Decisions are made by the end of May.
Because a Swiss academic has to agree to supervise the project, most of the real selection happens before the application: the professor decides whether to back you, and the commission advises supervisors to support no more than one or two candidates a year so that each letter carries weight.
Obligations during the award
Scholars must live in Switzerland, in the city or canton of their host institution, and research full-time. Any other funding must be reported to the commission. Research fellows may not do fieldwork outside Switzerland; PhD scholars may spend up to six months abroad for research but receive no extra money for it.
The supervisor commits to supervising the whole period, 12 months for a research stay or up to 36 for a PhD, and to integrating the scholar into the team with good working conditions.
How selection works
- Find a supervisor. Contact professors in Switzerland with a short CV, a motivation letter, two or three recommendation letters and a research plan of two to three pages. The search can take weeks or months.
- Letter of support. The supervisor writes a detailed letter on institutional letterhead describing the project, their relationship to you and the collaboration they foresee, with a short CV of their own.
- Online application. Apply through the online portal during your country's window. The system contacts your two referees by email for their letters.
- Embassy stage. The Swiss embassy responsible for your country receives the applications by its own deadline, between early October and the end of November.
- Commission review. The FCS assesses academic profile, project quality and supervision and collaboration potential.
- Decision. Results are announced by the end of May, for a start on 1 September.
Questions
Can I apply without a supervisor in Switzerland?
No. A letter of support from a Swiss academic supervisor is required, and the Swiss government offers no alternative funding for those who cannot find one.
Does the scholarship pay tuition?
No. Semester fees of 600 to 2,000 francs, conference costs and fieldwork are not covered.
Are postdoctoral scholarships still offered?
No. The Federal Council discontinued them from the 2027-28 academic year to concentrate on doctoral research.
Can I bring my family?
There are no family allowances, and the programme describes the rules on family visas as restrictive.
How many times can I apply?
Up to three times for the same type of scholarship.
Is the stipend a salary?
No. The 2,450 francs a month is a scholarship, and scholars must report any other funding.
Where can I study?
At cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, ETH Zurich, EPFL, or the PSI, WSL, Empa and Eawag research institutes; for art scholarships, at Swiss conservatories and art schools.
Can I do fieldwork abroad?
Research fellows cannot. PhD scholars may spend up to six months abroad for research, without extra funding.
Who decides?
The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, an independent body of 16 members from Swiss higher education and the student body.
