Folger Institute Fellowships
The Folger Institute's fellowships bring scholars and artists to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, which holds the world's largest collection of Shakespeare's printed works and a wide range of rare materials from early modern Britain and Europe. There are long fellowships of a semester or a year, short ones of one to three months that can be held on site or virtually, and artistic research fellowships, all open to any nationality.

How to apply
Apply on the Folger's online portal with a 250-word abstract, a 1,500-word project description, a list of the collection materials you plan to use and one letter of recommendation. Long-term and short-term fellowships need separate applications, but a letter can be carried over.
What the fellowships support
Folger Institute fellowships support individual research, scholarly and artistic, that expands understanding of the early modern world. The Institute describes its fellows as sharing interests in the history and literature, art and performance, philosophy, religion and politics of that world, and it puts them in direct contact with rare books, manuscripts, art, costumes, periodicals and prints, many of which are also available digitally.
Fellows work within a multidisciplinary community of researchers, with guidance from professional staff. The Institute says it values research that grapples with difficult historical questions and pays attention to what primary sources leave out, as well as what they say.
The kinds of fellowship
Long-term scholarly fellowships last nine months, paying 70,000 US dollars, or five months, paying 35,000, for the 2027-2028 year. Year-long fellows can take up to three months virtually and semester-long fellows one month. Long-term public humanities fellowships last nine months and support research together with a public humanities project for Folger audiences; they do not require a doctorate.
Short-term scholarly fellowships last one, two or three months and pay 5,000 dollars a month in residence or 4,000 a month virtually; they can be held fully on site, fully online or as a mix. Artistic research fellowships follow the same pattern for visual, performance and sonic artists, writers, filmmakers, poets, chefs, theatre-makers and others whose work draws on the early modern world. A Books in Progress fellowship is a two-day spring workshop for early career scholars with a complete draft of a book manuscript and no institutional support for reviewing it.
Who can apply
Fellowships are open to scholars of any nationality, and the Institute can sponsor international fellows on a J-1 visa and covers the cost of that application. Long-term scholarly applicants must hold a PhD or other terminal degree by the time the fellowship begins. Short-term fellowships are open to PhD holders and to doctoral candidates who are all but dissertation.
Artistic applicants, including archivists, curators, dramaturgs, librarians, performers and playwrights, need an appropriate degree or experience in their field. Graduate students who are not yet ABD are pointed to the Institute's scholarly programmes instead.
What virtual time can pay for
The virtual option was designed for people who cannot travel or commit to a long residence. Virtual months can buy time to write, access to digital resources, reproduction and permission fees for images of rare materials, or relief from summer or adjunct teaching, and the funds can also pay for childcare so that research can go ahead.
How selection works
- Application. Applicants submit online through the Folger portal: long-term by 15 December, short-term by 15 January, each by 11:59 pm Eastern time.
- External committee. An external committee of scholars, changed every year and chosen for disciplinary, methodological and geographical range, reviews the applications.
- Criteria. The committee weighs the topic's impact and relevance, the originality and sophistication of the approach, feasibility and use of the Folger collections, with most weight on impact, relevance and approach.
- Results. Long-term awards are announced in early March, short-term awards in mid April and artistic awards in late April. Reviewers' comments are not shared.
Questions
Can international scholars apply?
Yes. Fellowships are open to any nationality, and the Folger sponsors J-1 visas and pays for the application.
Do I need a PhD?
For long-term scholarly fellowships, by the time the fellowship starts. Short-term fellowships also accept ABD doctoral candidates, and public humanities and artistic fellowships do not require one.
Can I hold a Folger fellowship with another award?
Yes, if the periods do not overlap, since Folger fellowships are for full-time work.
How many times can I be funded?
You can apply as often as you like, but no more than two fellowships are awarded for one project.
Can I name the endowment I want?
No need: you do not name any fellowship endowment in your application.
Can a team apply?
Only the project lead can apply and receive a fellowship; explain the larger project and your role in it.
Will I get feedback?
No. Committee discussions are confidential and reviewers' comments are not shared.
Where would I live?
Residential fellows can choose Folger housing or find their own; the award is meant to cover travel, housing and living costs.
